Make mine chocolate!

Bunnies look so cute, but they are actually demanding pets that don't require any less care than a dog or a cat. Many rabbits given as gifts for Christmas or Easter end up neglected or abandoned. Get a chocolate bunny instead!

CAMPAGNA DI SENSIBILIZZAZIONE PER LA DIFESA DEL LAVORO DEI DISEGNATORI DI FUMETTO
*************************************************************************

Avv. Eleonora Trigari

*********************************************************

Sorry, I'll only translate this post in English upon request, since it has strictly to do with the situation of comics in Italy. It possibly never has been brilliant, but nowadays comic artists in Italy are barely able (if at all) to make a living. The lack of specific laws regarding the matter, the general crisis which affects every kind of entertainment inckuding comics themselves, the extremely low pays (when they pay at all) most publishing houses offer and many other factors make it so. An Italian comic artist must often choose between having a day or part-time "normal" job and not being able to afford a mortgage, a rent, a holiday, his/her wedding, a family. And this is very, very sad.

Comics Experience e Batman!
Pencils: Tony Daniel
Ink: Jonathan Glapion

A few weeks ago I  had the good luck to discover - more or less by chance - the Comics Experience website, and their online courses. I picked the course that interested me the most, basic comic coloring, and I found it really good.
Teacher is Chris Sotomayor, colorist for Marvel, and one can see his pages being critiqued and corrected before his eyes week after week, which is enormously useful towards learning. The last lesson saw Alex Sinclair of Batman fame joining us.
I learned a lot, had a lot of fun, and I hope the results show through my progress.
Only setback is, lessons started at 9pm EST as they were being broadcast from New York. 3am is not quite the best time to favor concentration!

Coniglietti a go-go!

Today I decided to delight you with some pictures of Mango, the little one that since the end of May has come into our home to be a companion for the beautiful (and bad-tempered) Maia. He's friendly and sooo sweet!

Manghino in azione!

Mango action shot!

Mango e signora si fanno le coccole. Notare quanto sono disapproving!

Mango and his lady having cuddles. They're so very disapproving!

Mango guards his wifebun fierce and menacing as a marshmallow.

And finally what is possibly the sweetest picture I was ever able to take. Too bad there's my mad-looking face with those circles under my eyes to ruin it, otherwise it would be just gorgeous! ;-)

Last weekend I was lucky enough to attend a watercolor workshop in Aachen (known in Italy as Aquisgrana and in France as Aix-la-Chapelle) held by Jenny Dolfen, known on DeviantArt as GoldSeven. I love the style of her works and her way to use watercolors, slightly different from what is classically taught but very effective for illustration, especially fantasy illustration.
I tried to put into practice her techniques and advice, and here is the result.

Grazie!

Originally she was supposed to be some kind of wolf girl, but the shape of the ears and eyes in the end resulted so much more cat-like than wolf.like. I need to try again using references!
I wish to once more thank Jenny and the other participants to the workshop - including my boyfriend, who accompanied me in the trip - for this nice and fun weekend and for the things that I learned, which I hope to put to use even more very soon. Thank you!

Un po' di work in progress
Queste sono le matite...
Here we have the pencils...

Here are the flat colors! I tried to ink in an Art Nouveau style, I love playing with the thickness of the lines and perhaps I should try to do that even more.  I love the shade of blue of the hair (I love blue hair, I think it's quite clear by now!) but I don't think it fits in well with the rest so it will probably have to shift into something else. Notice how at the beginning I wasn't sure about what to put in her hands, and in the end I chose a rabbit! I love bunnies, I have two now and they're scheduled to be bonded and go live together. For now they only give kisses to each other through the bars of the pen and they're really lovely. But he's still got his furry teabags (she is already spayed) so he'll have to wait a few more days...

During all the time I didn't post I wasn't slacking off, I was working on Bluejaye. I'm only on page 10. I'm the slowest colorist I know! Here is a taste of page 9. Line art by Jomar Bulda.

Despite not updating lately, I have been drawing and coloring actively. However, most of my time is now spent doing the Bluejaye project, from which I can't offer previews. Please be patient!
Also, my remaining free time is now absorbed by a new very welcome furry guest:

Qui a poche settimane, appena arrivata a casa.
Here she had just come home with us and she was but a few weeks old.

Dall'alto a sinistra:

While I wait for the Bluejaye pages to be ready, I have some fun with sketches and portraits, so I can practice copying as well as inking.. From the upper left:
-Catwoman and Power Girl as drawn by Adam Hughes
-One of those Art Nouveau ladies I so much love, drawn while trying to understand what Mucha and Hughes have in common.
-Tina (or Terra) Branford from Final Fantasy VI, one of my favorites character to portray from one of my favourite JRPGs. Old, yes, but still deserving a playthrough.

Acquerelli, Copic e correzioni in Photoshop (prima mi piaceva ancora meno).

Why, I often wonder, whenever I color one of my drawings with traditional media, I usually get tired of it before it's even finished? I find a thousand faults that I couldn't see before, I wish I'd redo it, and therefore I don't like it anymore. That's why this one's without a background, and it will remain so. Please help me understand what's wrong with it...
Watercolors, Copic markers and corrected in Photoshop (before that, I liked it even less).

I pulled out of the closet (my external hard disk drive) this old (and anatomically less than perfect) line art to experiment with a couple of coloring techniques found here and here.
Constructive critiques are welcome, or should I say requested. Bonus points for those who will help me correct the anatomy. <3

Avatar!

A me è piaciuto molto.

I saw Avatar last night.

I'm not going to write a review of the movie for this blog; there are plenty on the Internet and most are probably better than whatever I could write. However, I will say that the movie deserves to be seen, despite being clearly aimed at a wide public and therefore predictable from time to time. Artists especially should not neglect to watch it, because it is visually bright and lifelike, detailed both in character and setting creation, imaginative, and you often feel like you "are" there. I loved it.

You can find more high-resolution images
