Siccome negli ultimi giorni non riesco a disegnare nulla che mi piaccia, vi lascio a un'immagine di qualche tempo fa. E siccome mi è arrivato lo scanner nuovo ed è una bomba, non potevo che bullarmene. ù.ù
Mi sono accorta che non ho cancellato il logo impresso Fabriano ma chissenefrega.

Mi piacciono un sacchissimo le foto vintage. Questo in realtà altro non è che un ritratto reinterpretato di Lucienne Herval, un'attrice degli anni '30 - probabilmente francese - su cui non sono riuscita a trovare quasi nulla.
Su Lorivintage55stock on deviantART ci sono decine e decine di foto come quella che ho usato io risalenti dagli ultimi anni dell'800 agli anni '50; dateci un'occhiata se vi piace, è una raccolta che merita. E soprattutto se ne usate qualcuna, contattate l'autrice della raccolta e fateglielo sapere; le farà piacere. Le mette a disposizione a certe condizioni quindi accertatevi di leggerle e rispettarle.
La maggior parte di quelle bellissime attrici sono oggi pressoché del tutto sconosciute. È affascinante immaginare la vita dietro a quei ritratti e inquietante come il tempo abbia inghiottito completamente la loro storia, cancellandola e lasciandoci solo con poche immagini per tentare di ricordare. Miliardi di vite umane sono passate così, senza lasciare traccia alcuna sulla Terra. Dov'è andata la loro vita, la loro esperienza, dove sono le loro anime composte da tutto ciò che erano, sapevano e facevano? Spesso me lo chiedo...

Since lately I can't draw anything that suits my taste, I leave you with a picture from a while ago. And since I have a brand new Canon scanner that was delivered today, I couldn't but flaunt it. *_*
I forgot to erase the Fabriano logo (an Italian brand of drawing paper) but who cares.


I'm in love with vintage photographs. Actually, this is the re-interpreted portrait of Lucienne Herval, an actress from the 30's - probably French - about whom I couldn't find much information. On Lorivintage55stock on deviantART you will find tens and tens of photos like the one I used, from the last years of the 1800's to the 1950's. Catch a glimpse of it if you like them, it's really worth it. Just, if you use any of those for your works, let her know, she'll be pleased. She makes them available at certain conditions so make sure to read them, understand them and respect them.
Most of those beautiful actresses are totally unknown to us today. It's fascinating to think about the lives behind those portraits and unsettling to think how time swallowed all that they and their lives were, leaving us with only a few images to try to recall. Where have gone their lives, their experiences, their very souls mad with all that they were, did and knew? I often wonder...

Perdonate la bassa qualità, ma chi vorrà vedere l'illustrazione in tutta la sua gloria non avrà che da aspettare e acquistare il libro. ;-) E a parte questo, il mio scanner è un multifunzione, ossia uno di quegli apparecchi che fanno un sacco di cose senza farne davvero bene nemmeno una.

Ah, e ho deciso di inventare una nuova malattia psicoloGGica dell'artista: la sindrome di Mirka. Ossia quando un artista è incapace di apprezzare il suo stesso lavoro anche quando tutti gli dicono che è bello. Perché a me questa tavola ha fatto disperare, mi sembra ultrapiatta e con la testa enorme. Con la differenza che Mirka è brava DAVVERO.

Oh, and I decided to invent a new artist's disease: the Mirka syndrome. Which is, when an artist can't appreciate his/her own work, even when everybody around them tells them it's pretty. Because this illustration made me desperate. I think it looks totally flat, and she's got a giant head.
The difference with me is, Mirka draws REALLY well.

Questa commissione verrà pagata con del caffè di torrefazione veneziano, che dove abito non si trova. XD

It's a commission that will be printed on a gift T-shirt. This commission will be paid with coffee from a Venetian coffee shop, which I cannot find where I live. XD

Avete mai immaginato di essere il personaggio di un videogioco giapponese? Non dite di no...
Personalmente sono una fan sfegatata di alcune serie, tra cui (ovviamente, direte voi) Final Fantasy. E quando mi hanno lanciato la sfida... come rifiutare?! Tra l'altro il modo in cui ho iniziato a giocare a Final Fantasy è tutto particolare. Si tratta di me, non c'è da stupirsi!
Ho scritto la mia tesi di laurea su Yoshitaka Amano, un illustratore che ho imparato ad apprezzare proprio mentre radunavo informazioni su di lui in vista della tesi. Per chi non lo sa, Amano è stato il character designer dei primi sei giochi della serie e ha illustrato anche tutti gli altri giochi della serie principale. Provate a cercare le sue interpretazioni di Tina/Terra (VI), solo per fare un esempio, di Quina (IX), di Tidus e Yuna (X): sono fantastiche. Ha fatto anche un mare di altra roba ma dovrei fare un blog intero solo per parlare di lui...
Comunque per meglio documentarmi ho deciso di... esatto, di giocare a Final Fantasy. Non che fosse strettamente necessario, ma era un'ottima scusa... *COFF*
Tra l'altro, i CD di Final Fantasy 1 e 2 per la Playstation contengono delle immagini che non sempre ho trovato sui libri, e che si possono sbloccare solo procedendo nel gioco. Immaginate questa tizia fuori di vaso che passa 6-7 ore al giorno a scrivere la tesi, e tutto il resto del tempo gioca come una disperata per sbloccare le immagini... per fortuna a un certo punto ho trovato un meraviglioso programmino per ripparle senza fare fatica, ma ho continuato a giocare. Senza parlare del fatto che, siccome su Amano non si trovava certo materiale nelle biblioteche di nipponistica, ho dovuto cercare materiale... alle fiere del fumetto. Immaginate questa mia amica che si incacchiava dicendo "Francesca gira le fiere del fumetto, e io sono qua che faccio una fatica boia e marcisco in biblioteca!" o qualcosa del genere. Un po' mi vergogno...

Did you ever imagine you were a character from a Japanese videogame? I know you did. I love a few series, including (of course) the most famous of them all, Final Fantasy. So when they asked me to draw myself as a FF character, I couldn't say no.
The way I started playing Final Fantasy games is kind of unusual, like most things concerning myself. I wrote my graduation thesis on Yoshitaka Amano, a Japanese illustrator who, as many of you will know, was character designer to the first six games in the series, and image illustrator to all following games in the main series. His renderings of Tina/Terra (VI), Quina (IX) or Tidus and Yuna (X) are awesome, check them out. He did lots of other stuff as well, but I should open another blog just to talk about him.
By the way, I started playing Final Fantasy games the better to gather information about him. Not that it was absolutely necessary, but it was an excellent excuse to begin... *COUGHS*
Also, the Playstation version of Final Fantasy I and II (Final Fantasy Origins) contains unlockable images that I didn't find in the books I had and that can only be unlocked as you play on. Imagine this girl gone nuts who spent 6 to 7 hours a day writing her thesis, and the rest of the time she spent playing desperately in order to unlock the stuff. Luckily, I finally found a lovely software that let me unlock all of them with ease. But by then the charm had been worked and I kept playing.
It is also funny that, since I could not find material about Amano in universitary libraries, I had to go to comic markets and shops in order to find and purchase the books I needed. There was this friend of mine who was like, "Francesca goes to comic markets, and I am here having a hard time and locked up in a stinky library!" I'm a little bit ashamed if I think about it...

Me as a JRPG character

Avevo iniziato questo disegno qualche anno fa, prima di partire per l'estero, e non ero mai riuscita a finirlo. Ma questo Natale, visto che mi hanno regalato una splendida scatola di Caran D'Ache acquerellabili, ho deciso di approfittarne per terminarlo.

Quest'anno spero che riuscirò a completare un portfolio degno di tale nome. A gennaio ricomincerò le lezioni, e da lì non mi resta che darmi da fare. Progetti in corso ne ho, cose su cui esercitarmi pure, quindi al lavoro!

I had begun this illustration a few years ago, but then I went to live abroad without taking it with me and I never finished. This Christmas I got a wonderful box of Caran D'Ache watercolour pencils, so I decided to finish it.
